US President Barack Obama cautioned President-elect Donald Trump
US President Barack Obama cautioned President-elect Donald Trump that a shift in the US stance to the one-China policy could lead to “significant consequences” in the relationship between Washington and Beijing. Obama, who was speaking during a pre-Christmas conference on Friday, said that "the idea of one China is at the heart of their conception as a nation and so if you are going to upend this understanding, you have to have thought through what necessary the consequences are." The outgoing president also noted that he had advised Trump that foreign policy had to be conducted in a “systematic, deliberate, intentional way.” Noting that Beijing would not treat Washington’s departure from the decades-long policy lightly, Obama said that no other bilateral relationship carries more significance than US-China relationship, and if the US-China relation breaks down, everyone becomes worse off.
